Tallahassee Fire Training Division is located at:

2964 Municipal Way
Tallahassee, FL 32304

This facility is used for firefighting training programs and was formerly a part of the Dale Mabry Army Airfield, which operated from 1928 to 1961.  The facility is served by a municipal water supply system that provides its drinking water. There is an on-site retention pond. A site reconnaissance of the facility was completed on June 11, 2019. A preliminary site assessment (PSA) was conducted on June 12, 2019.  Laboratory results from the PSA indicate that concentrations of perfluorooctanoate acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in groundwater were above the provisional Groundwater Cleanup Target Level. Concentrations of PFOA and PFOS in soil were above provisional soil cleanup target levels.

The city of Tallahassee has been notified of the results.  The Florida Department of Health (DOH) has been requested to initiate a private potable well survey in the immediate area. DOH completed the sampling of nine potable wells around the Tallahassee Fire Training Division on March 4, 2020, and found one well that exceeded the Health Advisory Level.  DOH efforts are ongoing.

DEP’s Water Supply Restoration Program is providing bottled water to all interested affected private well owners whose test results exceeded the established EPA Health Advisory Level. This voluntary program also provides funding for a filter, well restoration or connection to public water system as necessary to ensure a safe drinking water supply. This bottled water supply will remain available until one of these options is in place.

During 2022, DEP assumed project management duties associated with continued per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) assessment at the facility.
