WasteCalc is a user-friendly, computer-based model that will enable Florida's counties to efficiently update MSW composition data annually. It was developed from 2000-2002 by Pinellas County and its team of consultants, along with input from several other Florida counties. The project was predominantly funded through DEP's 1999-2000 Innovative Recycling Grant Program.

WasteCalc will supplement periodic field sampling studies or reduce the necessary frequency of such studies. It is intended to assist counties in estimating these generation rates and in preparing their annual solid waste report to the state. To use the model, Florida's county solid waste managers and planners need only enter county-specific information into the model's interactive format. The model incorporates the latest MSW research conducted for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency along with the MSW and construction and demolition debris data for Florida available during development of WasteCalc to provide results that can be regularly updated. In addition, it relies on local demographic and sampling data to adjust the national numbers and account for local conditions.
