The Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) Site Screening Section conducts CERCLA site assessments on sites with confirmed or suspected contamination to document whether a release of hazardous substances has occurred and to evaluate potential threats to nearby receptors, including but not limited to drinking water wells and surface water bodies. Research and file review is conducted by DEP staff.

Fieldwork, when required, is accomplished using a combination of DEP staff, EPA staff and private contractors. The information collected during the assessments is used to complete a Hazard Ranking System (HRS) evaluation.

The HRS score and the supporting site information are then evaluated by EPA in determining whether the site should be included on the National Priorities List (NPL) and cleaned up under the Superfund program.
