The Melbourne Fire Training Facility is located at:

1980 Hughes Road
Melbourne, FL 32935

This facility used aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) on a limited basis as a demonstration to new recruits once or twice each year.  The foam was applied within two areas located in proximity to the burn tower. The facility is served by a municipal water supply system.

A site reconnaissance of the facility was completed on February 26, 2019.  A preliminary site assessment was conducted April 8, 2019.  Ground water and soil samples were collected.  There are no surface water features, therefore no sediment nor surface water samples were collected.  Analytical results were received May 8, 2019, indicating concentrations of perfluorooctanoate acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in groundwater and soil exceeding provisional soil cleanup criteria.

DEP advised the Florida Department of Health (DOH) of these results and directed them to develop and implement a community sampling plan. DOH completed the sampling of twenty potable wells around the Melbourne Fire Training Facility on July 24, 2019; none of the wells exceeded the Health Advisory Level so DOH has suspended site activities. DEP will continue to work with the City to develop a cleanup plan to remove or contain the contamination to prevent environmental impact and human exposure. A City consultant has commenced additional site assessment activities.
